The story of how my pottery began…

The "Leaf" collection

My story

It all began with a simple pinch pot I made in the third grade, sparking a lifelong love of clay. Starting in 2001, over the course of fifteen years, I continued learning through pottery continuing education classes at the University of North Alabama, developing my skills and passion for the craft.

With the encouragement of a dear friend, Angee Plyler, I returned to the studio to create pieces for The Purple Pear, a shop she was helping her daughter open in Lexington, Alabama.

That encouragement rekindled my creative spirit, and in 2018, Martha Martha Pottery was born.

What began as a passion project has grown into a joyful pursuit of craftsmanship and creativity. Each piece I make carries a bit of my story—and hopefully finds its way into someone else’s. My goal is to create pottery that feels both personal and enduring, designed to be used, loved, and shared.

Hand-painted Heart Plate

About my work

I am a hand builder of functional pottery, creating each piece with care and intention. My process begins with a flat slab of clay that I shape using simple materials—cardboard, wood, or plaster molds—to form unique, functional designs. I finish each piece with texture or hand-painted surface details, giving every work a sense of individuality and connection to the hand that made it.

My inspiration comes from many places: the quiet beauty of nature, the charm of antique objects, and the timeless appeal of handmade craftsmanship. I love how pottery can be both functional and expressive—art that becomes part of daily life.
